Library and self-service
Q&A on how to use the library
Questions and answers
What is self-help time?
When the library’s self-service hours are in use, you can enter the library even if the doors are locked.
How do I get into the library when the doors are locked?
You must have a valid library card and PIN code from the Library of Lapland. The PIN code contains 4 digits. Show your library card to the device next to the front door and enter your PIN code on the reader’s keypad, the lock on the front door of the library will open (the door will stay open for 10 seconds). The PIN code is the same as the one you use to log in to the online library.
When can I enter the library even if the doors are locked?
Self-service hours are available outside normal opening hours: on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9-10 and 18-20, on Thursdays and Fridays from 9-10 and 17-20, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9-20.
Can I let others in with the same door opening?
Yes, you can let your own children under 15 years old in. You can’t let others in. Anyone who registers on their own time will be recorded on the camera video. If you let people other than your family members into the library, your self-service rights may be revoked. You are responsible for anyone you let into the library during self-service.
Are staff present when self-service is available?
As a rule, staff are not available during the evenings and weekends. In the mornings, staff may work inside. Opening hours are from 10 a.m. Monday to Friday.
What can I do in the library if the staff is not there?
You can borrow and return with a vending machine. You can retrieve the material you have reserved. You can read magazines. You can use customer computers. You can use the library’s wireless internet.
You can not copy or print. You can not use the home office, storage or meeting and training room. You cannot get advice from staff because we are not there.
What do I do if I can’t get in even though I have a library card and PIN?
If the staff is present (in the morning), you can ring the library doorbell or call the library (040 746 0267). We will check where the problem is. On weekends and evenings you will not be able to enter the library if your card does not work.
Why can’t I get in even though I have a library card and PIN?
Your library card may be out of date. Libraries check your contact details every 10 years, in which case your card will be “out of date” until we have checked your contact details together.
Children under 15 years of age must have a parent or guardian’s consent to use the self-help library. So ask your guardian to visit the library and grant you this right.
You can lose your access if you violate the library’s rules of use.
How can I pick up my reservation during self-service?
Reservations are placed near the loan/return machine on the RESERVE RETURN shelf. The works are sorted by your reservation number. The code is made up of a series of numbers, but you can change the reservation code yourself in the online library in your personal data.
How can I borrow or return material on my own time?
There is a loan/return machine at your disposal.
Be careful – you are responsible for the material you handle!
Put your returned material in the Returned shelf or the Reserved box next to the machine.
The machine’s screen said that there were reservations for the work I had returned. What do I do?
Put the work in the box marked “Reserved”.
What should I do if I feel that other users are being disruptive in the library on their own time?
You can kindly point out any disruptive behaviour and that all activities in the library are recorded on cameras. The library’s rules of use and the Public Order Act (27.6.2003/612) prohibit disruptive behaviour and, for example, the use of intoxicants in public areas.
If the activity is such that it poses a danger to other users or library property, call 112 and report the incident.
Rules of use and other common guidelines of the Library of Lapland
As we are part of a common library in Lapland, we have common rules for using the library. Behaviour that violates the rules of use may result in temporary restrictions on the use of the self-help library.
